Is It a Nonconformity or an Opportunity for Improvement? Understanding the Difference

When auditing a management system in accordance with standards such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management System), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety), or ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System), two common findings emerge:   nonconformities   and   opportunities for improvement (OFIs) . While both are integral to the auditing process, they serve different purposes and carry distinct implications. Let’s explore the differences between them and their significance in the context of management systems and ISO standards. What Is a Nonconformity? A nonconformity is a failure to meet a specific requirement. This requirement could stem from an ISO standard, an internal procedure, or a regulatory mandate. In essence, a nonconformity highlights a gap or deviation from established norms.
